Child Element: Two Child Limit - Scrapped plans

The government had planned to have harsher Two Child Limit rules in UC from 1st February 2019, which would have meant that a Child Element would not have been included in the claimant's 'Maximum Universal Credit' for a third or subsequent child/young person regardless of the date they were born (although some children/young people were to be protected / excluded from this rule).

But on 11 January 2019 Alok Sharma, Minister of State for Employment announced a U-turn in the government's plans to have stricter 2 child limit rules for new Universal Credit claimants from 1 February 2019.

He said,

'The Department has looked again carefully at this issue with particular focus on the families making a new claim whose children were all born prior to the implementation of the policy. We have concluded that including these families would not be right and therefore they will be entitled to support for any children born before 6 April 2017, the date that the policy was introduced. I am bringing forward the necessary legislation to enable this change'.
